The Vuelta Abajo Region
Pinar del Río province in western Cuba. The principal premium tobacco-growing region: alluvial soil with limestone subsoil, January-March dry season aligned with harvest, and microclimates within the region (San Juan y Martínez, San Luis) producing slightly different leaf character.
The region has been the world's premier tobacco-growing area since approximately the 18th century. Generations of selection of plant varietals adapted to this specific soil-climate combination have produced the distinctive Cuban character.
Habanos S.A. Production
Habanos S.A. is the joint venture (originally Cuban government and Altadis, now Imperial Tobacco Group with continued Cuban government ownership) that distributes Cuban cigars internationally. The company manages all major Cuban factories.
Major factories: El Laguito (Cohiba), Partagás (Partagás and others), H. Upmann (H. Upmann and Montecristo), Romeo y Julieta. Each factory produces a portion of the global Cuban cigar supply, with editorial direction shared across the Habanos S.A. blend office.
Major Cuban Marcas
Cohiba: founded 1966. The Habanos flagship. Línea Clásica, Línea 1492 (the Siglos), Maduro 5, Behike. The most-prestigious modern Cuban marca.
Montecristo: founded 1935. The most-distributed Cuban marca globally. The No. 2 torpedo is the worldwide commercial flagship.
Romeo y Julieta: founded 1875. The Cuban classical. Churchill (47 × 7) is the format and the cigar that most-defines what "Cuban classical" means.
Partagás: founded 1845. Body-weight Cuban — fuller, more concentrated. Serie D No. 4 is the calibration reference.
H. Upmann: founded 1844. Restrained Cuban — cedar, leather, cream. Sir Winston Churchill's preferred marca.
Trinidad: founded 1969. The lancero specialist. Fundadores is the format study.
Buying Cuban Cigars
For aficionados not in the United States, Cuban cigars are widely available through La Casa del Habano stores in major cities (Madrid, London, Geneva, Mexico City, Tokyo, Hong Kong, Toronto). These are the official Habanos S.A. retail network.
Counterfeit risk is substantial. The triple cap test, band quality, box seal, and (for Cohiba Behike) the medio-tiempo flavor signature are the principal authentication tests.
