Premium cigars in 2026 can be purchased through three principal channels — authorized retailers, online specialists, and travel acquisitions. Each has distinct advantages, and the disciplined aficionado uses all three for different purposes.

Authorized Retailers

A local authorized retailer (a tobacconist or specialty store with verified premium-cigar supply chains) is the foundation of any cigar collection. The retailer provides storage discipline (humidified inventory at consistent RH), product authentication, and the relationship that allows access to limited editions and special releases.

The cost premium for buying through an authorized retailer is typically 10-25% versus online — fair compensation for storage discipline, product knowledge, and the ability to inspect cigars before purchase.

Online Specialists

Reputable online specialists (Cigar Aficionado-listed sellers, established cigar.com competitors, regional specialists) provide broader inventory and competitive pricing. The trade-off: humidification quality during shipping is variable, return policies for construction issues are restrictive, and counterfeit risk is real.

Online purchases work best for quantity-buying of established lines from major brands (Padrón Anniversary, Ashton Cabinet, Hemingway, etc.) where authenticity is harder to compromise and humidification recovery is reliable.

Travel Acquisitions

Cuban cigars in particular are commonly purchased during travel to countries where they are legally available (most of Europe, Canada, Mexico, parts of Asia). La Casa del Habano stores in major cities are the official Habanos S.A. retail network and provide reliable authentication.

Travel acquisitions require attention to import regulations: most countries permit personal-use quantities (typically 50 cigars or less) without commercial declaration, but limits vary. The encyclopedia's Appendix E documents current customs practices for major destinations.
