Pairing Notes: Tawny Port and a Maduro
Some pairings are clever. This one is just right โ the kind you return to when the evening turns cold and you want no surprises.
The pour
An aged tawny port โ ten years or more. Look for dried fig, walnut, and caramel, with enough acidity to keep it from going heavy. The oxidative, nutty character is the whole point.
The cigar
A medium-to-full maduro: dark, oily wrapper, notes of cocoa, espresso, and a little dried fruit. The sweetness of the wrapper meets the sweetness of the wine without either one shouting.
Why it works
- The port's nuttiness echoes the maduro's roasted core.
- Residual sugar softens the cigar's pepper and tannin.
- Both finish long, so neither rushes the other.
Pour small, smoke slow. The pairing rewards patience more than quantity.
Serve the port lightly cooled, not cold. More pairing notes will follow here on the BLOG.
