Cutting and Lighting: A Short Field Guide
A great cigar can be undone in its first thirty seconds. The cut and the light are where most avoidable mistakes happen. Here is how to get both right.
The cut
Your goal is a clean opening that doesn't unravel the cap.
- Guillotine — fast and reliable; cut just above the cap's shoulder, in one confident motion.
- Punch — preserves more of the cap and concentrates the draw; good for thicker ring gauges.
- V-cut — a middle path; deeper channel, more surface area.
Cut too deep and the wrapper peels. When in doubt, take less — you can always cut again.
The light
Patience here pays off for the entire smoke.
- Use a butane torch or cedar spill, never a sulfur match or a candle.
- Toast the foot first: hold the flame just below the cigar and rotate, without touching.
- Then light: bring the foot to the flame, puff gently, and rotate until the whole ring glows evenly.
An even light means an even burn. Rush it and you'll fight a canoeing wrapper for the next hour.
